The "City of the Popes", the capital of ancient Etruscan origin and of great historical traditions, preserves one of the most important monuments of Lazio: aristocratic palaces, monuments rich in works of art of great interest, suggestive medieval quarters, churches and cloisters from various eras, slender towers and elegant peperino fountains (the typical stone of Viterbo buildings).

It is surrounded by high medieval crenellated walls and massive towers (built from 1095 to 1268), still almost intact today, with access from 8 doors. Strolling in the historic center of Viterbo is equivalent to taking a trip back in time, as the town is rich in monuments and historic buildings, most of which refer to the Middle Ages. Among the most important things to see in Viterbo we remember: the Town Hall, built in the fifteenth century at the behest of Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere, is characterized by a large portico and a seventeenth-century factory that doubled the volume of the building; the Palazzo del Podestà, a graceful thirteenth-century building which, despite the numerous restorations, still retains the charm of the ancient; Palazzo Farnese, one of the most impressive buildings in the entire historic center of Viterbo, which was built in the fifteenth century and which hosted important people who have marked history in its frescoed rooms; the very central Piazza San Lorenzo, the beating heart of the medieval city and the center of the ecclesiastical power of the city, with the complex of the Cathedral, the Loggia and the Palazzo dei Papi; the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, built in the 12th century in Romanesque style on the site of a temple dedicated to Hercules, which houses valuable works of art by the greatest artists of the 15th-18th centuries; the Palazzo dei Papi, a beautiful Gothic-style building erected in the 13th century to house the Popes during their frequent stays in Viterbo; the Loggia dei Papi, added in the 15th century to the Palazzo dei Papi, is characterized by seven arches supported by thin columns that make the whole harmonious and light and represents one of the postcards of the city and one of the most panoramic points in all of Viterbo; the Civic Museum, set up in the premises of the former convent of Santa Maria della Verità, which houses numerous testimonies of the past of Viterbo, from its origins to the modern age; the Sanctuary of Santa Rosa, a nineteenth-century reconstruction of a previous religious building erected to preserve the sacred relic of the saint's body (visible inside the church), which is the final stage of the characteristic Procession of Santa Rosa, which takes place every year on September 3, in which 90 porters carry on their shoulders through the streets of Viterbo to the Macchina di Santa Rosa, a monumental false bell tower over 30 meters high. Near Viterbo, in the locality of Bagnaia, there is Villa Lante, one of the greatest achievements of the Italian sixteenth century. To remember in particular the Fountain of the Moors by Giambologna, the two buildings (Gambara and Montalto) and a spectacular system of fountains and water games as well as a beautiful wooded park. The whole Villa (between the Italian garden and the park) occupies an area of 22 hectares. The extraordinary peculiarity of Villa Lante is inherent in the predominance of the garden over the architectural work; in fact the residence splits into two small twin buildings (even if built at different times) symmetrical with respect to the central axis of the garden which dominates the entire composition through the water path. The geometries of water at Villa Lante: Water comes from a triumph of geometries designed by evergreen hedges and peperino statues and follows a path that creates basins and water features. The Garden of Villa Lante is thus an enchanted place created and wanted by a powerful cardinal in the name of man's supremacy over nature. Enclosed in a rigorous geometric maze by the architect Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, Villa Lante was built in the second half of the sixteenth century at the behest of Cardinal Gambara, close to a wood that was once a hunting reserve.
