Montalto di Castro

1. Guglielmi Castle (14 km from us)

Among the main buildings, the  Guglielmi Castle  which, with the quadrangular tower covered with ivy, can be considered the  symbol of the city.

Even if the legend attributes its construction to  Wish  (VIII century), Duke of Tuscia and later King of the Lombards, the palace was built around  15th century  give it  Orsini, then undergoing various modifications and renovations over time: among these the battlements and the loggia whose works were completed in the early 1900s.

The castle is next to the town walls on one side, of which it follows the curved line, thus acquiring one  convex shape.  This side  constitutes the  oldest part  of the fortress: on its walls, surmounted by  Guelph battlements, numerous Renaissance and 19th century openings can be admired. The other wing of the castle was built later, in the eighteenth century, completely in brick.

2. Church of Santa Maria Assunta  (14 km from us)

Traveling  via Soldatelli  you arrive in front of the beautiful eighteenth-century facade of the  Church of Santa Maria Assunta.

The building shows above the travertine portal  coat of arms of Pope Pius VI Braschi  who promoted its complete renovation in 1783.

The interior, with a single nave, is decorated with interesting  paintings of the late eighteenth  century while in a reliquary, on the right, the relics of Quirino and Candido, the patron saints of Montalto, are preserved.

3. The Archaeological Park of Vulci  (26  km from us)

The archaeological area of the park is enclosed by the  original walls  (IV century BC), formed by solid blocks of tuff that for centuries have protected the city and from  Urban doors, including the monumental one  West Gate, near which you can also admire the remains of a  Roman aqueduct.

Within the area we find the  Hole  with the  Great Temple  and the Honorary Arch, a commemorative work of  Publius Sulpicius Mundus, Roman senator who lived in the 1st century BC, the podium of an imposing  Etruscan temple  also in tuff (V century BC), different environments of the so-called  domus of the Cryptoporticus  luxurious aristocratic residence of the second century. to. C., a small  temple dedicated to Hercules  and a beautiful  Mithraeum  dating back to the third century. B.C

On the opposite bank of the river, there is the  Etruscan necropolis, which houses thousands of tombs among which the precious one stands out  François Tomb  (4th century BC) which is accessed through a long corridor,  there  Tomb of the Inscriptions  and the imposing  Tumulus of the Cuccumella.

To the precious François Tomb (which takes its name from the archaeologist Alessandro François who discovered it in 1857) belong  wonderful frescoes, for the most part kept in the  Villa Albani  in Rome, which depict the saga of the brothers Vibenna and Servio Tullio, in the period of struggles against the Tarquini for dominance over Rome.

4. Pellicone lake  (27  km from us)

The Pellicone is a small lake formed by the Fiore river, located within the naturalistic archaeological park of Vulci in the municipality of Montalto di Castro. Upstream of the lake, the Fiora river has created, over the centuries, a canyon between basalt and limestone rocks, finally the river flows into the lake through a waterfall about six meters high which makes the panorama even more suggestive. The lake is surrounded by two high cliffs, lots of vegetation and a small beach that disappears during periods of flood. The Pellicone lake has been the scene of many cinematographic scenes, certainly the most famous are that of we just have to cry, in which Troisi and Benigni meet the great Leonardo, or the scene of three men and a leg when they stop during the I travel to take a bath.

5. The Castle of the Abbadia  (27  km from us)

Within the large area of the  Vulci Naturalistic Park , is the  Medieval Castle of Abbadia  seat of  archaeological Museum  and reachable through the spectacular  Devil's Bridge  from which one enjoys a  simply breathtaking view!

If you have already visited the archaeological park and the necropolis you cannot absolutely miss this wonder, the perfect place to learn more about Etruscan history and art and also take some  unforgettable  panoramic photo!
