Tarot Garden

images.jpg

The Tarot Garden is an artistic park located in Garavicchio, near Pescia Fiorentina, a municipal fraction of Capalbio (GR) in Tuscany, conceived by the Franco-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle, populated with statues inspired by the figures of the major arcana of the Tarot. The sculptures, therefore dense with symbolic and esoteric meanings, are the last stage of an artistic journey started by Niki de Saint Phalle in the mid-1960s, after abandoning the Nouveau Réalisme and the multi-material assemblages for the creation of the so-called "Nanas" , huge, sinuous walkable and habitable female figures, the first of which, the Hon, was built in 1966 for the Stockholm Museum and the most famous of which, the Tete, was finished in 1973 in the Milly-la-Foret wood in France and declared a national monument by President Mitterrand. In the intense and very lively colors, in the "spasmodic expansion of forms and in the radiance inspired by the masters of chromatism, from Matisse to Picasso, from Kandinskij to Klee", the full-bodied, explosive sculptures of the Tarot Garden, dressed in a "dress of light that transforms the various personalized figures into a fabulous succession of neo-baroque parure ", kidnap" the attention and senses of the spectator ", who, far from going through an amusement park, makes a sort of initiatory path that refers to illustrious precedents - Bomarzo, the Ideal Palace by Ferdinand Cheval in the Drome, Park Guell, the Watts Towers by Simon Rodia in Los Angeles - but which is characterized above all by the presence of a maternal and powerful Feminine, full of symbolic complexity and “non-random connections (. ..) with the psychic and physical ordeals "of the author.
